What a discovery today! Probably one of my favorite wines of the week (month perhaps 🙂), but this beauty certainly didn’t go overlooked.
Also today is #OpenThatBottleNight, #nationalholidays! Another reason to open that bottle!
Where’s my orange wine fans at? Hands up! And for those of you hating on orange wines, you’ve got to open this beauty.
👀a beautiful amber color (because of the full skin contact fermentation)
👃 The nose reveals fruity aromas with fresh raisins and smell of stone fruits
👅Spicy touches, some honeyed tones, stone fruits like peach, apricot, raisins, earthy touches, lingering aftertaste, completing the balanced wine.
Let's talk about a true gem in the wine world - a Georgian wine from Gelovani, made using the traditional method of Qvevri.
You might be wondering, what the heck is #Qvevri?
Well. Qvevri means "that which is buried" or "something dug deep in the ground".
The Qvevri is a funky-looking, egg-shaped clay vessel with a narrow bottom and a wide mouth at the top. It was a real game-changer back in the day.
Oxygen and temperature swings are the two biggest enemies of wine, as these factors can mess with the winemaking process, storage, and the overall longevity of the wine.
As you know, there were no fancy fridges or wine bottles 8,000 years ago, our ancestors had to get a little creative.
The Qvevri was born. Good things about it:
🍷 Once the pressed grapes are loaded into the vessel, the clay top seals it up tight to prevent any pesky oxidation from ruining the wine
🍷 The soil surrounding the Qvevri helps to dissipate any heat generated during the fermentation process and keeps the wine at a constant temperature all year round.
🍷 For some, a tiny downside to this method. The wine stays in contact with the grape skins for the entire time until it's either consumed or transferred to a smaller vessel for transportation. This is why Qvevri white wines always have that unique amber color and notable tannic flavor.
And now you know, who the genius was that invented Orange wines! 🍊
